In contrast to a traditional evaluation, our assessments do not involve direct one-on-one standardized testing, which is often used to determine eligibility for special education services. Rather, a curriculum-based assessment is conducted to specifically pinpoint areas of strength and areas of need in the domains of social communication and emotional regulation, the core challenges in children and adolescents with social learning disabilities. Our assessments rely on direct observation of a child in his or her natural social environment, e.g., school, home, and community settings in order to determine meaningful, purposeful, and motivating goals and to determine the most appropriate transactional supports (e.g., interpersonal support and learning supports) for a child's educational team members, family, and social partners in the community.
A social communication assessment and treatment planning sessions are often requested when an agency, school district, or family is seeking:
Strategies for facilitating a child's progress both at home and in a school settings, including visual supports, augmentative communication, and curriculum modifications to foster communication and social skill development.
An objective baseline to gauge progress over time.
Information for this assessment is typically gathered via video tape by the family or educational team and is provided to Communication Crossroads prior to a scheduled treatment planning session. At the completion of the assessment, a comprehensive written report is provided to detail current performance levels in each of these areas and provide specific guidelines for educational planning (e.g., recommendations for IEP/IFSP benchmarks and learning supports). A 3 hour treatment planning session is then scheduled to review the report and provide individualized training through video review at our office in Monterey or via video conferencing for long distance clients. Please note that, due to scheduling constraints, assessment and treatment planning sessions are typically scheduled approximately 6 to 9 months in advance.
